The Longest Electric Bus Trial Officially Begins, KALISTA and Sumber Alam Take on the Jakarta – Yogyakarta Route
Press Release
Kutoarjo, May 25, 2025 – PT Kalista Nusa Armada (KALISTA) has officially launched an electric bus trial in collaboration with PT Sumber Alam Ekspres (Sumber Alam), coinciding with Sumber Alam’s 50th Anniversary celebration held on Sunday (25/05) at the Sumber Adventure Center in Kutoarjo.
Following the introduction of the trial plan during the Periklindo Electric Vehicle Show (PEVS), KALISTA further boosted public enthusiasm by holding an electric bus livery design competition. The winning design, announced on May 10, 2025, during the BisMania National Jamboree, will be used on the electric bus unit operating on this trial route.
“This collaboration between KALISTA and Sumber Alam to begin a trial on the Jakarta – Yogyakarta route marks a significant milestone in the transformation of public transportation, especially for long-distance AKAP routes, to create eco-friendly, emission-free travel. This trial proves that electric buses are indeed viable for long-distance routes, provided they are supported by well-planned and structured strategies,” said Albert Aulia Ilyas, CEO of KALISTA.
The unit used in the trial is a 12-meter electric coach bus with a 303 kWh battery, capable of carrying up to 41 passengers. The trial covers a distance of approximately 500 km with an estimated travel time of around 12 hours. The bus is equipped with various safety features such as emergency door sensors, fire extinguisher, emergency door buttons, glass-breaking hammers, emergency exits, CCTV, 360° camera, and seatbelts.
Before launching the trial, KALISTA’s team conducted a road test to determine the optimal locations for charging station installation. Based on the field survey, the bus can travel up to 400 km per charge, leading to the decision to install charging stations in three locations: Sumber Alam Yogyakarta Depot, Sumber Alam Ajibarang Restaurant, and Sumber Alam Rest Area in Cikamurang, each equipped with 200 kW charging capacity. These charging sessions are designed to last no more than one hour and will coincide with rest breaks, ensuring that travel time remains unaffected.
During the road test, KALISTA’s operations team departed from the Sumber Alam Yogyakarta Depot with a fully charged 303 kWh battery, following the route: Sumber Alam Kutoarjo Pool – Ajibarang Rest Area – Cikamurang Rest Area – Sumber Alam Pondok Ungu Pool. In total, the Yogyakarta – Jakarta route recorded a distance of 543 km, with an average energy efficiency of 1.5 km/kWh, meaning each 1 kWh of energy allows for 1.5 km of travel. In terms of cost-efficiency, using electric buses results in up to 52% lower energy costs compared to conventional buses.
The electric bus will depart from Yogyakarta at 4:00 PM, following the route: Sumber Alam Yogyakarta Depot – Kutoarjo Pool – Ajibarang Rest Area – Pondok Ungu Pool. The return trip from Jakarta will depart at 8:00 PM, following the reverse route: Pondok Ungu Pool – Cikamurang Rest Area – Ajibarang Rest Area – Kutoarjo Pool – Yogyakarta Depot.
The fare for this route is set at IDR 170,000, inclusive of one meal, as determined by Sumber Alam as the operator. Throughout the trial, various parameters will be evaluated, including: number of passengers, unit comfort, average daily mileage, and cost-efficiency. These insights will be used as the foundation for future operational planning.
This trial is expected to serve as a key milestone in demonstrating that electric buses are capable of handling long-distance travel efficiently. It also aims to accelerate the transition toward sustainable mobility and inspire other AKAP operators to begin shifting to electric vehicles, helping build a cleaner, emission-free transportation system.
