Expanding Electrification Initiatives to the Mining Sector: KALISTA and Kideco’s Light EV Trial Achieves Energy Savings of Up to 79%
Press Release
Jakarta, September 14th, 2026 – KALISTA, an end-to-end commercial electric vehicle ecosystems provider, in collaboration with PT Kideco Jaya Agung (Kideco), recorded energy cost savings of up to 79% and an estimated emissions reduction of up to 65% from a trial of electric light vehicles (EVs) at Kideco’s mining operations in Batu Kajang, East Kalimantan. This collaboration between the two subsidiaries of the Indika Energy Group demonstrates the potential of electrifying operational vehicles to support energy efficiency while advancing decarbonization efforts in the mining sector.
The trial, which took place from August 13 to September 20, utilized two types of electric vehicles: a double-cab pickup with a battery capacity of 88.02 kWh and an MPV with a battery capacity of 64.7 kWh. These vehicles were operated directly under real mining conditions to evaluate their operational performance and technical feasibility.
Based on the results of a one-month trial (data from August 13 to September 14), the double-cab unit traveled 1,526 km with an energy efficiency ratio of 3.12 km/kWh, energy cost savings of 72%, and an estimated 65% reduction in emissions compared to fossil fuel-powered vehicles. Meanwhile, the MPV unit traveled 2,097 km with an energy efficiency of 5.01 km/kWh, energy cost savings of 79%, and an estimated 65% reduction in emissions compared to conventional MPVs.
These results are significant given that improving energy efficiency and reducing emissions are key components of the mining sector’s sustainability agenda. For Kideco, the mobile combustion fleet remains one of the largest sources of emissions in the company’s operations.
“Building on the successful implementation of electric trucks in mining operations, we are once again exploring the potential for electrification in other parts of our fleet. Currently, light vehicles constitute one of the largest fleet segments, with a population of approximately 1,200 units. Naturally, this has drawn our attention regarding the potential for electrification. Together with KALISTA, Kideco is conducting field tests on two electric light vehicles under real-world mining conditions so that we can evaluate their performance firsthand,” said Kurnia Ariawan, CEO of Kideco.
During the trial period, the vehicle’s performance was evaluated based on a number of operational parameters, including mileage, energy consumption, charging time, utilization rate, vehicle reliability, and the vehicle’s ability to handle various conditions and terrain characteristics in mining operations, including ground clearance. One of the established success indicators was the vehicle’s ability to travel up to 150 kilometers on a single charge, with a target utilization rate of at least 80%.
“KALISTA is once again opening a new chapter in commercial vehicle electrification. Following the successful implementation of electric trucks in the logistics and urban sectors, we are once again addressing the challenges of electrification in the mining sector. This time, in collaboration with Kideco, KALISTA is conducting trials of light electric vehicles (EVs) in a real-world mining operation to explore their use as employee transportation, delivering comprehensive sustainable mobility,” said Albert Aulia Ilyas, CEO of KALISTA.
As part of Indika Energy, KALISTA has developed a Fleet-as-a-Service (FaaS) approach that offers integrated solutions ranging from vehicle provisioning, optimal OPEX-based financing schemes, infrastructure installation and charging pattern determination, fleet monitoring, to maintenance and after-sales services—all designed to help businesses accelerate the adoption of operational fleets tailored to each company’s specific needs and characteristics. KALISTA develops electrification solutions for various sectors, including urban transportation, logistics, mining, and plantations.
The joint pilot project with Kideco serves as an example of how commercial vehicle electrification can be tested under real-world operational conditions with complex demands. The lessons learned from this process are expected to enrich the development of electrification solutions that are increasingly tailored to industry needs while supporting efforts to decarbonize Indonesia’s mining sector.
