KALISTA and Efisiensi Collaboration: Electric Intercity Bus Trial, First in Indonesia

Press Release

As an innovative step in supporting sustainable mobility, PT Kalista Soter Hastia (KALISTA), part of the KALISTA Group, is collaborating with PT Efisiensi Putra Utama (Efisiensi) to conduct the first electric bus trial in Indonesia serving intercity routes. This trial will take place over the course of one month, from March 12 to April 12, 2025.

Challenges in Implementing Electric Intercity Buses

Currently, there are no electric buses operating on intercity routes in Indonesia due to several major challenges, including limited charging infrastructure along intercity routes, restricted driving range, and high investment costs associated with transitioning fleets to electric buses.

Indonesia’s First Electric Intercity Bus Trial

In collaboration with KALISTA as a comprehensive EV ecosystem provider, Efisiensi has launched an electric bus trial using two Higer models: a 5-meter van and a 12-meter coach bus. The selection of these electric bus types was based on an in-depth survey conducted by KALISTA, taking into account various operational aspects including route, road conditions, travel duration, average speed, and stop locations.

Simplified Transition with KALISTA’s Comprehensive EV Ecosystem

Transitioning to electric buses is made easier with KALISTA’s all-inclusive ecosystem. Infrastructure limitations are no longer an obstacle, as KALISTA ensures infrastructure readiness as a core part of its solution. A 200 kWh charging station has been installed at Efisiensi’s Cilacap Depot to support optimal operations.

Energy Cost Savings & Emission Reductions

The 12-meter coach bus, equipped with a 303 kWh battery and a 41-passenger capacity, will operate on the Cilacap–Yogyakarta route and vice versa, with three designated stops: Efisiensi Depot Cilacap, Efisiensi Depot Kebumen, and Efisiensi Depot Ambarketawang. This route will take approximately 6 hours and cover 200 km with one charging session.

Meanwhile, the 5-meter van, with a 70 kWh battery and 15-passenger capacity, will serve as a feeder vehicle for intercity routes in the Yogyakarta inner ring road and Maguwoharjo areas.

The one-month trial—covering an average of 400 km per day—is expected to deliver up to 61% fuel cost savings compared to conventional diesel buses (calculated using bio-diesel prices and bulk rates), while also reducing carbon emissions by up to 28%. All savings and operational data will be monitored in real-time using KALISTA’s Fleet Management System, fully integrated with the fleet.

This collaboration aims to demonstrate KALISTA and Efisiensi’s commitment to accelerating EV adoption in the public transportation sector. It also seeks to inspire other intercity operators (AKAP, AKDP, PATAS, etc.) to begin their journey toward electric mobility—with no upfront investment—in partnership with KALISTA, to help build a sustainable mobility ecosystem in Indonesia.
